The Effectiveness of Using English Songs in E-learning Environment on EFL College Students’ Speaking Skills

Abstract

E-learning environment of teaching English as a foreign language involves different kinds of technology-based instruction that helps students developing the language skills. Using English songs in e-learning environment improve students’ fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, familiarity with the English culture and increase students’ motivation and engagement in the speaking setting. The present study investigates the effectiveness of using English songs in e-learning environment on EFL college students’ speaking skills. To verify the hypotheses of the current research and to achieve its intended aims, the researcher adopts a questionnaire. The study is applied to 50 first-year students from the online course of Listening and Speaking Skills of the Department of English at Al-Ma’moun University College, Baghdad – Iraq during the academic year 2019-2020. Following the training, a questionnaire had been applied to the students on the effect of using English songs in the e-learning environment. According to the results of the analysis, a significant difference between students’ achievement with the face to face learning and e-learning environments. Owing to the importance of the e-learning environment in TEFL the present study aims at:         

1- comparing the achievements of the students face to face and e-learning. The e-learning environment is proved to be the most effective strategy of the learning environment.

2- assessing the proficiency of  EFL college students’ speaking skills in using English songs in the e-learning environment.   

The study concludes that using English songs in the e-learning environment can improve speaking skills and engage students in discussion about cultural and social issues. Likewise, results show that practicing listening with songs can become an effective method to enhance students’ speaking skills.
