About Erbil

Erbil, also spelt Arbil (Kurdish: ھەولێر / Hewlêr‎), locally called Hawler by the Kurds, is the capital city of Iraqi Kurdistan and the most populated city in the Kurdish inhabited areas. It is located approximately in the center of Iraqi Kurdistan region and north of Iraq. It has about 850,000 inhabitants, and Erbil governorate has a permanent population of 2,009,367 as of 2015.

Human settlement at Erbil can be dated back to possibly 5th millennium BC, and it is one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in the world. At the heart of the city is the ancient Citadel of Erbil. The earliest historical reference to the region dates to the Third Dynasty of Ur of Sumer, when King Shulgi mentioned the city of Urbilum. The city was later conquered by the Assyrians.

Conference Objectives

The main objective of the ICAD 2026 conference is to create space for presentation of current and state-of-the-art concepts and results of scientific work in various fields of Architecture and Interior Design. The conference also presents a platform for creating collaborative links and continuous engagement between academics and professional practitioners and their workplaces, aiming at long-term sharing and exchange of knowledge and ideas on the most pressing issues and development in the Architecture and Interior Design field.

Conference Objectives

You are invited to participate in the FIFth International Conference on Architecture & Interior Design (ICAD 2026) under theme of “Change and Resilience in the 21st Century.” in the city of Erbil, Kurdistan Region-Iraq on 29th-30th of April, 2026. The event is jointly organized by Tishk International University and Koya University.

Prof. Dr. Wahda Shuker Al-HinkawiProfessor of Architecture and Urban Design, University of Technology – Iraq

Dr. Wahda Shuker is a professor at the University of Technology, Iraq, with over 30 years of academic and professional experience. She holds a Ph.D. in Urban Design and Spatial Analysis and has focused her research on urban design, spatial organization, and historical centers. She has published more than 40 papers and supervised numerous graduate theses. She served as Head of the Architectural Engineering Department and held roles in national academic committees and editorial boards. Her professional work includes contributions to Iraq’s planning laws, building codes, and major urban development projects for key ministries and investment authorities.

Prof. Dr. Lech Suwala is a Professor at the Institute of Urban and Regional Planning, TU Berlin, since 2023, and served as Visiting Professor there from 2017 to 2023. He was also a Visiting Professor at Jagiellonian University in Kraków (2019–2020), Ritsumeikan University in Japan (2015), and a Research Fellow in Canada (2015). He worked as a Research Associate at HU Berlin (2007–2017) and lectured in Namibia (2011/2013). His expertise lies in economic geography, innovation, and spatial planning, with a strong international academic background.

Sahar Mohammed Yahya is an accomplished architect, educator, and consultant with over 27 years of experience in academia and architectural practice. She is deeply passionate about architectural theory, built environments, and heritage preservation. She received the Sheikha Fatma bint Mubarak Prize for her work documenting Mosul’s architectural identity. Sahar contributed to UNESCO and UN-Habitat guidelines and founded the “Eye on Mosul” platform to support heritage research and artistic expression. She has published two books and multiple academic papers. As a visual artist and photographer, her exhibitions and work focus on the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Mosul.
