Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has been started to effect economic, financial, social, psychological issues all over the world. Hence the current way of living that the human have been practicing changed and starts impacting lifestyle, habits and new emerging technologies introduced. The main objective of this study was assessing the significance of digital payment during the covid-19 case of Ethiopia. In several parts of Africa, paying for food, clothes or public transport with a phone is commonplace. Mobile money is taking off in Ethiopia, too, with COVID-19 as the catalyst. The digital form of payment is becoming increasingly common in Ethiopia, and the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated what was already a trend. The study result showed that after the occurrence of the covid-19 in Ethiopia the number of people interesting to use the e-payment has been increasing massively and major type of digital payment that has used by customer includes, M-birrr, hello cash, birritu, mobile banking, E-birr and Amole. Challenges associated with the digital payment is Ethiopia are Low level of internet penetration and poorly developed telecommunication infrastructure, Lack of suitable legal and regulatory framework for e-commerce and e-payment, inadequate banking system, High rates of illiteracy,  high cost of internet and absence of financial networks that links different banks (Banks are not yet automated). Therefore, to solve the above challenges developing telecommunication infrastructures, designing legal regulatory framework for e-commerce, developing good banking system and working on improving the people awareness.
