Abstract
This paper aims to demonstrate the importance of linguistic analysis in criminal investigations and judicial procedures and the way to benefit from it, using the most relevant types of linguistic analysis in the criminal justice system. They are a comparison between the speaker and the writer of the text or message, an evaluation of the writer of the text or message and the speaker, and then discourse analysis. As for the comparison, it is between at least two speakers, and two or more authors, between written and paper communications or through electronic communication, or between voice, telephone or electronic communications, to determine whether it is from the same person or from two or more different persons, and either Writer-speaker assessment is intended to create a profile of the person who made a particular statement, and discourse analysis is used to facilitate understanding of recorded conversations.
In this paper, we will present several Arab and international examples in which linguists have assisted investigators in confirming or excluding known suspects, by studying and evaluating written or recorded speech as evidence of the charge, thus assisting law enforcement officials in the accuracy of an investigation or trial.
